Week 1 Class Starts Off-Ice for Beginners

Beginner-level skaters—including those in Snowplow Sam 1, Hockey Skating 1, Basic 1, Adult 1, and similar levels—will start with an off-ice introduction. Instructors will meet their class in the lobby and cover essential basics, such as proper skate tying, correct posture, and fundamental skills like falling and getting up safely. After this brief introduction, skaters will transition onto the ice.

What to Wear
  • Clothing: Comfortable, flexible layers (such as athletic or yoga pants) to allow for easy movement.
  • Socks: Thin, mid-shin socks to help prevent blisters. Avoid thick socks, especially for figure skates.
  • Gloves: Regular gloves are recommended. Please note that due to their bulk, hockey gloves may not be the best option for beginner levels.
  • Helmets:
    • Optional but strongly recommended for regular Learn to Skate participants, especially Snowplow Sam.
    • Required for all Hockey skaters.
Choosing Skates: Figure Skates vs. Hockey Skates

For absolute beginners, figure skates are often easier to balance in due to their longer, flatter blade, which provides more stability. Many new skaters find it helpful to start with figure skates and transition to hockey skates later on as their confidence and balance improve on the ice. Hockey skates have a shorter, more curved blade, which allows for quick turns and speed but can feel less stable at first. If you’re unsure which skates to start with, feel free to ask your instructor for more guidance

Rental skates are included for beginning skaters. Skaters in advanced levels (Free Skate, Specialty classes, and Learn to Play) need their own skates for safety.

Practice Makes Progress!

Consistent practice is key to improving skating skills. As a Learn to Skate class member, you can take advantage of a special $5 public skate rate, which includes skate rental. Be sure to check our public skate calendar for available session times. This rate is only valid between the session start and end dates, and only in person at Ice & Field.
